After five very successful years with Kings Local School District and 39 years in education, Superintendent Chuck Mason, 61, is retiring. Mr. Mason started his career as social studies teacher at Reading Community Schools in 1969. He taught and coached at Reading for 20 years. For the past 19 years, he has served as an administrator in the Mason, Sycamore and Kings School Districts.

“I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to serve the Kings community these past five years,” Mr. Mason said. “I thank the board for taking a chance on a rookie superintendent and hopefully people feel that it was a good decision.”

Kings has had many triumphs under Mr. Mason’s leadership. For seven consecutive years the Ohio Department of Education has rated Kings Excellent. The district has talented, dedicated staff and many of the buildings have earned prestigious awards. In his five years with the district, Mr. Mason has worked cooperatively with the community, gaining support for several levies and a much needed bond issue, which will address classroom space, technology and maintenance issues throughout the district. The new space and renovations will completely transform the learning and teaching environment at the high school and junior high.

“I’ve been blessed to work with an outstanding administrative team, teaching staff, support staff and board of education. The community support for what we’ve accomplished here at Kings has been overwhelming. It’s what makes Kings such a special place,” Mr. Mason said.

Making the decision to retire was not an easy one.

“People think that making the decision to retire is simple. I found it extremely difficult. I am somewhat conflicted by wanting to stay and wanting to go. It’s hard to stop doing something you’ve done for 39 years, because, for good or bad, that is what has defined me. Now I’m going to spend some time redefining myself. I believe through the efforts of our administration, our board, our staff and our community, I will leave Kings a better place,” Mr. Mason said.

The board will accept Mr. Mason’s resignation due to retirement at the May 19 board meeting.

“I was surprised by the suddenness of this decision,” said Board President Hale Husband. “He has done a lot for the Kings District in the last five years. Within weeks of becoming Superintendent the Bus Fleet was heavily damaged by high winds and from that point on it was one thing after another. I will miss him tremendously, not only as an excellent Superintendent, but also as a good friend.”

Mr. Mason’s last day is July 31. After that he plans to spend more time with his family, doing the things he loves best: running, biking and fishing. He and his wife Kathy will take vacations – not dependent upon Spring and Winter breaks from school – spend time with their two daughters, sons-in-law and four grandchildren.
